CONFLICT IN LITERATURE 2
Della Dillingham is the hero in the "Gift of the Magi" by O. Henry. The story is
composed from the restricted omniscience perspective. Della is the hero of the story, and I then
found her in this case interesting on the grounds that she is totally selfless, warm and loving.
The theme of the story is found to be about a sacrifice, and Della surrenders her most
valuable ownership to give her husband other types of the Christmas present.
The external conflict in Della is that tomorrow is Christmas Eve, and she needs to
purchase Jim a present, however she just has only $1.82. Be that as it may, she is frantic to get
him something uncommon and very special, as she cherishes him to such an extent.
Della internally is then faced with the choice to offer her most prized type of possession;
in which is her hair. Further, she fears the loss of her stunning locks will influence less to
alluring and attractive also to her husband. The bluntness of the physical setting, the gray
backyard, the gray fence and the gray cat delineate how dreary life is. In any case, this stands in
sharp difference to Della's profundity, warmth, and rich love.
I think the setting is very critical to the meaning or significance of the story, as
notwithstanding their current money related constraints Jim and Della profoundly adore and
love each other, and the surrender what they hold most dear (other than each other) to fulfill the
other desire of satisfaction and making the other party to be happy . As Clugston (2014) calls
attention to, Jim and Della, and their benevolent endowments and gifts are among the most
astute, "all who give and get gifts, for example, they are wisest. Wherever they are wisest," (p.
64).
