Working Thesis:
The character who is the main in the story, "What You Pawn I Will Redeem," is Jackson,
a destitute alcoholic who sets out on a mission to recover a family treasure, however experiences
numerous deterrents; and along the way. The vast majority of them are self-inflicted.
Body Paragraph:
As we look after Jackson on his mission to buy his grandma's regalia for dancing, we see
then how the life of a destitute alcoholic can lead one to settle on life decisions that discourage
him from accomplishing his objective. The story, "What You Pawn I Will Redeem", is narrated
by Jackson who is the main character, and happens in the Seattle Street. The story takes after
Jackson; a Spokane Indian who migrated to Seattle to seek after his training, yet dropped out,
and wound up noticeably homeless; around the streets, from bars to railroad yards, and the
docks. "His life doesn't appear to have significance, and he's recently making a halfhearted effort
until the point that he sees his grandma's regalia for dancing in a pawn shop." (Alexie, 2003) He
enlightens us regarding how he sets out on a mission to sufficiently collect cash to buy the
regalia from the pawnbroker; for $1000; yet every time he falls into some cash, he ends up
spending it on liquor, nourishment, and his companions. "He needs to associate with his past or
ancestry root and buying the regalia; since in his mind; is the main way he can recapture some
portion of his heritage." (Alexie, 2003) He wins cash playing the lottery, and a few people in the
neighborhood group either give him cash, or furnish him with a chance to gain cash, however he
generally appears to spend it on an option that is other than his objective. After the apportioned
measure of time to buy the regalia had terminated, he just has $5 to his name. "At last, the
second hand store proprietor sees that he endeavored to raise the required sum, and pitches it to
him for $5." (Alexie, 2003)
