Views of the Human Problem and Theodicy
Among the four views (Stoic, Christian, Buddhist, and Confucian) of human problem and
its cure, which one do you agree with most and why?
Among these views of human problem and its cure, I think the Christian view is the best.
This is because, the fact that human life is not divine, it is thus depended on God’s intervention. I
think this view combines the other three views since it is God that enables one to gain knowledge
and wisdom, which is the major virtue in the stoic view. Similarly, God controls karma, which is
a key virtue in the Buddhist view (Morreall and Sonn 23). Apart from that, having a strong
relationship with God helps one to have favor and build better relations with others, which is a
key virtue in the Confucian view. In light of these, it is evident that God is in overall control of
human life, thus helping to alleviate human problem through divine intervention (Morreall and
Sonn 34).
Among various theodicies (Theodicy of Mystical Participation, The Karma-Samsara
Theodicy, Suffering as Recompense for Sin, Suffering as a Test, A Theodicy of Submission,
The Free Will Defense, Process Theodicy, etc.), which theodicy makes the most sense, or is
the most satisfying to you and why?
The theodicy that makes most sense according to me is the monotheistic theodicy. This
theodicy is based on the Christian belief that there is a benevolent and omnipotent God (Morreall
and Sonn 55). This theodicy makes sense to me because all the religions in the world believe in a

supreme God and life after death. This therefore gives the monotheistic theodicy more relevant
to the other theodicies and religions. This theodicy is also consistent with the other theodicies
because it believes that evil comes from demonic spirits. As such, it is a more elaborate and clear
theodicy, with backup and appeal from the other religions and theodicies (Morreall and Sonn
67).
