RELIEF AID IN PUERTO RICO 2
One of the reasons why relief aid is taking longer to get to Puerto Rico is the Trump
administration’s slow response to distribute relief aid on the island another reason is the island is
still being treated like a colony. Since it is an island, the distribution of relief aid is difficult
hence supplies have to be flown in or sent by ship since most infrastructures have been
destroyed. The number of ports and airports being used are very few thus there is overcrowding,
and this has led to longer durations when doing logistics for the relief goods to be released. Due
to a large number of people who need help, it takes time to ensure that the assistance reaches to
every single one of them. Another challenge is the shortage of supplies like fuel thus cargo
containing relief aid cannot be moved. Also, lack of preparations in advance even though
weather company Accuweather foretold when the hurricanes would happen (Foster, 1983).
Also, Puerto Rico was reluctant in asking for assistance as well as accepting it. The
Governor Ricardo Rossello said that it took time to realize how much devastation had occurred.
There are also concerns how the island due to it being bankrupt, would refund the states offering
assistance as required by the compact (Monge, 1999).
