Marijuana
Introduction
Commonly referred to as bhang, marijuana is a psychoactive drug that comes from the
cannabis plant, and it is intended to serve medical purposes, spiritual purposes or for recreational
use (Schmidt, Jacobs, & Spetz., 2016) The scientific name for this drug is cannabis sativa, and the
main psychoactive part of this plant is tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). The effects of the drug sets
in within minutes of smoking and the effects can last for a period of two to six hours. The long-
term effects that are linked to the smoking of bhang include addiction/dependency on the drug,
decreased mental ability and behavioral problems in children where mothers consumed the drug
during their expectancy period.
Scientific research has shown a strong relation exists between the consumption of
cannabis and the risk of one having psychosis. This is however debatable. In 2013, statics show
that the use of marijuana in America was 2.7% and 4.9% globally. In 2015, 43% of Americans
had in one way or the other used cannabis, and this figures rose to 51% in 2016 (BARRY, HIILAMO,
& GLANTZ., 2014). These ratings make marijuana the most commonly used illegal drug not only in
America but also in the world. Cannabis has been used since the 3
rd
millennium, and since the
20
th
century, this drug has continued to be used subject to legal restrictions. In most countries, the
possession, use and, sale of cannabis is considered illegal. For this and many other reasons such
as its effect on the consumer, the use of marijuana is still highly debatable, and several laws that
govern its use have been enacted. Different political parties have various stands on the same, and
the pros and cons of each of the parties views is discussed below
