Opiates are drugs that are made from opium; a substance extorted from different types of
the poppy plant. They attach to opioid receptors in the body, and they lessen the strength of pain.
There has been a high dominance of opiate abuse led by an alarming rise in the number of the
prescription being recommended for these drugs. According to Harrington, the number went up
as of seventy-six million in 1991 to almost two hundred and seven million by 2013.
These drugs are very addictive and have side effects such as sleepiness, exhilaration,
confusion, and constipation depending on its type, in what quantity it's taken, and how regularly.
However, the most severe side effect is physical reliance and addiction. On the brain they can
have a long-term consequence if consumed in large doses which may include; Hypoxia, a
condition where the depression in respiration occurs which is caused by taking in the opiates
drugs. Thus reducing the quantity of oxygen that gets to the brain, which can result in a lasting
mental and neurological harm in addition to stimulating a coma.
Furthermore, research has shown that abusing these drugs can result in worsening of the
white matter in the brain, which in turn may cause extensive or lasting problems and tribulations
in decision-making capability together with having an effect on the ability to control behavioral
conduct and reacting correctly to tense and worrying circumstances.
Additionally, opiate abusers tend to have much higher threats and risks of increased
despaired, nervousness and bipolar disorders by ten times more than non-abusers which are
much likely to call for inpatient psychological health services. The user may also experience a
sense of ecstasy or Euphoria the strong sentiment of joy and enthusiasm. This condition is
tremendous for those who inject or sniff the drugs (Sherman, 2008).
