PART B 2
Key Principles
In relation to the case of Jose, the Donald Super's Theory can provide a clear basis for
rendering assistance to the client. According to Super's theory, an individual must undergo
and complete various career developmental stages before achieving maturity. Super asserts
that human being passes through five major stages which include growth, exploration,
establishment, maintenance, and decline (Swanson & Fouad, 2014). At growth stage, from
birth to 14 years old, children start developing a self-concept based on various factors such as
mental, actual and perceived physical abilities. At exploration stage, from 14 to 25 age range,
an individual starts developing a clear understanding of different career occupations and
begin envisioning themselves in different careers.
At establishment stage, between 25 to 45 years, people started selecting their job and
begin working. At this point, people begin comparing their self-concept to the job they are
working and decides whether it is good or they should look for alternative jobs (Swanson &
Fouad, 2014). At maintenance stage, between the age of 45 to 65 years, people begin to settle
at their job and starts developing interests and skills as they advance through their careers and
lives. At decline or disengagement stage, 65 years and above, people's focus on job begin to
slowly diminish and they started focusing on other areas of life.
