Section 1 Introduction
What I know I think I know about the black intellectual.
Before I could conduct a thorough research on this topic, I was defining the black intellectual as
considerably small echelon or section of African Americans who were highly educated and
literate and had accessibility to mechanisms for publications. I had read different books including
William Banks’ “Black Intellectuals: Race and Responsibility in American Life”. In this book,
the author narrates the rich history of key African American thinkers within the context of race,
slavery, and modernization. The author strongly emphasizes that black intellectualism is now
widely known. I found myself confused reading book because it does not give the reader a clear
understanding of the black intellectualism. In other words, the book can be interpreted twofold.
First, it represents black intellectualism as a historically construed topic. Second, it depicts the
black intellectualism as a narrow topic that does not require in-depth study (Christopher, 2014).
This led me to assume that black intellectualism is all about fairly educated African Americans
in the United States. However, I also read work of Jonathan Scott who argues that black
intellectualism revolves around a crisis of living or crisis of moment in a world where most
people strongly believe that word “intellectual and “black” are mutually exclusive. In his book,
Scott explains the importance of recognizing how the issue of the black intellectual is both a
historical creation and an analytical lens. Nevertheless, the book did not give me a clear grasp of

meaning and philosophy behind black intellectual. I had many questions in mind which did not
get a logical answer. For instance, the book did not provide me with a logical explanation about
the importance of black intellectual and why it was widely studied across the globe (Christopher,
2014).
I had an opportunity to read another book by Holloway who argued that American Negro
Academy was established mainly to promote ideas of black intellectuals. Many scholars suggest
that black intellectual had been wrongfully used as the historical or methodological tool. Many
scholars argue that early antebellum and American historians were exploring patterns of black
intellectuals through careful analysis of culture and society. For instance, in his book, Patrick
Rael, uses the term “black intelligentsia” to highlighting the functions of status and class among
the African Americans.
Through my predictions and inquiry, I hope to find black intellectual as a term used to denote
achievements made by the African Americans in their quest for education. I also think that I will
find black intellectual being presented, in many studies, as a crucial endeavor among the African
Americans in their quest for education and knowledge (Christopher, 2014).
Section two research process
In essence, every sociological research consists of various stages that should be followed for
ensuring comprehensive study. In my research, I chose a topic (black intellectual) to research.
Then, I involved in gathering and analyzing different information on the topic.
In order to come up with comprehensive and detailed information on black intellectual, I used
different questions in my research. Some of the questions I applied in my research include:
