ANALYSIS SHORT STORIES AND NOVEL EXCERPTS 2
Analysis Short Stories and Novel Excerpts
The short stories, Hills Like Elephants and Joy Luck Excerpts seek to highlight the
existing characteristics and substances that influence the state of mind in both men and women.
Such elements as illustrated also influence the decisions taken at different times and points in
life. Some of the elements depicted in the excerpts include relationships, culture, and feministic
characteristics.
To start with, In the short story Hills like white elephants, we find a couple quarreling
procuring an abortion. It portrays a picture of a submissive woman who dreads going through the
process of abortion but is willing to compromise her virtue and dignity just to please her
husband/ boyfriend. In fact, at one point the girl admits that she does not care what will happen
to her as far as the boyfriend is happy. The scene also brings out the woman as someone weak
incapable of making firm decisions but instead looks up to the man for guidance and direction. In
a feministic approach and according to the excerpt Hills like White elephants, the woman

boyfriends plan of procuring an abortion albeit being against her will.

would make her sad or unhappy. In fact, he assures her that he loves her and will still love her
after the operation regardless of the outcome (Hemingway). The fear of rejection is also evident
in the Joy luck excerpts depicted by the second Wife to Wu-Tsing. Notably seeing she cannot
bear children, she gets a third wife for her husband but one who is uglier to prevent Wu-Tsing
