EVIDENCE 2
Primary types of evidence include; testimonial evidence. This is a type of evidence in
which people try to prove a point. Advertisements that use representatives to attest to the quality
of an organization’s product, attorneys who depend on account of eyewitnesses to succeed in a
case, or students who use quotes in their assignments. These are all examples of testimonial
evidence (Lee, 1994).
Another type of primary evidence is; statistical evidence. This is the type of information
people tend to search for when trying to prove a case. They usually rely on the provision of
numbers to justify the main point. Examples include; Sensodyne toothpaste advertisement that
says 3 out of 4 dentists recommends the use of Sensodyne (Swanson, 1992).
Another type is anecdotal evidence. This is evidence that relies on a person’s view of the
world. It is often considered unreliable and worthless. However, it can be beneficial when
contradicting generalization since all that is needed may be an example that challenges a claim.
An example is when a non-native English speaker who can speak excellent English doesn’t
demonstrate that all non-native English speakers can speak fluent grammar (Kirk, 1974).
Another type of evidence is the analogical evidence. This kind of evidence is mainly
useful when handling issues that have not been adequately researched. When one lacks statistics
that they can refer to or other sources on the subject, one has to rely on another source to get the
information. This is when analogical evidence comes in. An example is when one is tasked to
research a river to see if it would make a great white-water rafting ride. One would look for other
rivers that have the same similarities and check if there has been any form of casualties as a
result of white-water rafting. Although the rivers are not the same, the resemblances between
them should be able to make your research credible (FOUR, 2015).
