BUILDING AND REPAIRING TRUST 3
Building and repairing trust in ways that make you more effective at school work and home
Trust is important to an effective team since it gives a sense of safety. This makes the team
members or the family members feel much secure with one another and therefore become
innovative and productive.
The following are strategies for building trust;
1. Leading by example- if you want to build and repair trust among the team members, you
should first lead by example and trust your team.
2. Communicate openly- open communication will help you build trust. This is done by
coming up with a team charter and arranging team building exercises.
3. Knowing each other personally- this can be done by creating situations that can make the
team members interact, share stories, therefore forming stronger bonds.
4. Don’t place blame- placing blames to someone can undermine trust, lower morale as well
as becoming unproductive due to unpleasant atmosphere developed.
5. Discuss trust issues- develop strategies that can be used to overcome the challenges
encountered by an established team. This can be accomplished by giving out the
questionnaires to team members to fill out and then discuss the issues.
6. Discourage cliques- some team members who share common interests may form cliques.
Therefore you should discourage cliques for this will undermine trust among group
members thus resulting to isolation.
7. Telling the truth- commit yourself to tell the truth no matter how difficult it may seem.
8. Be transparent- creating a good rapport builds trust. You should therefore take a risk and
learn how to share yourself to people in order for them to trust you.
