It is believed that real power comes from within and that therefore, power is NOT a scarce
commodity. In fact, you can increase your power by sharing it, that is, by empowering others.
Power is not directly related to your position within the organization, but rather to who you
are as a human being (internal power). Your power and effectiveness can be multiplied by
mutual sharing of resources, skills, knowledge, and ideas. Then when you have more power,
so do I (and vice versa) (Seivert, 2013).
In today’s current environment, the old adage has been tweaked to say, “the sharing of
knowledge is power.” Having appropriate access to increased information allows all
members of the organization to function more effectively, thus making the organization
stronger and more profitable as a whole. The key to empowering the people you are leading
is giving them knowledge-keeping them well-informed at the appropriate levels.
