Antigone
Antigone is the main character in the play, Antigone. This shows that she is the heroine in the
play since she plays a major role, especially in the case of burying her brother, when in it is
considered wrong for the woman to be involved in such matters. She understands and is aware of
the prohibition of the woman to be involved in such matters. She also has a good idea of what
punishment could be attracted by being involved with the burying of her brother. Once a woman
is heard to be involved in burial, twice in this case, death as a punishment awaits her. This is
what Antigone eventually faces as a result of trying to do good by ensuring that her bury is well
buried. She feels that she has responsibility of doing so as opposed to what she is expected to do.
The basic conflict therefore, arises once Antigone takes on responsibilities that not hers which
then becomes a problem with the uncle, Creon, who is the king at the time. Creon is surprised
that the niece is to blame for the act. Haemon, Creon’s son, however, is quick to defend his
cousin, Antigone, to his father with regard to the act but Creon is a king who follows rules to the
latter and respects his position of authority.
Creon refuses to go by Haemon on his defense since he believes in justice not going
unrewarded which also applies to every action. Antigone is a representation of good in the
society. This comes about when she becomes a heroine in the ply by taking it upon herself to
ensure that her brother is buried since no one is willing to take it upon themselves. The major
reason behind Antigone burying her brother is so that she may have his soul saved as opposed to
not burying it and the soul losing its way. She is a heroine to her brother’s soul. She takes family
or her blood as an important aspect of life and takes care of the same. She follows her instincts
and she becomes bold enough to take up the task of burying her own, therefore showing that her
nature is that of boldness. Creon, on the other hand, represents the rule of law. He does so by
