The developmental concept is biological, psychological and emotional variations that
happen from the time of birth, adolescent to adulthood ending in autonomy. Focusing on
cognitive development, the child needs to have perpetual skills, language learning aspect and
how to process learned information from parenting period as a way of making the brain develop.
Likewise, nature and nurture plays a big role in both continues and discontinues ways. Cognitive
development is all about change where a baby learns the difference between reality and
appearance. Nature is the biological endowment of the type of genes obtained from parents
whereas nurture is environmental, social and the physical things like schooling and the people
the child interacts with. Aspects of development are as a result of environment-gene interaction
meaning that with no environment to give nurture, there will be no child and lacking genes no
child. Notably, visual development comes from correlating nature and nurture work.
Using the sociocultural theories, culture gives an open influence to child development.
The surrounding peoples’ values, attitudes, and beliefs dictate how a child will process certain
information. Culture will profile experiences, influences in child development. It teaches them
on what temperaments and behaviors best suit them. Similarly, some cultures prefer
interdependence (connections) to independence through the pro-social child is friendlier.

Children from countries of interdependence seem cooperative, but less competitive unlike those
from a western culture who are competitive.
Jean Piaget’s theory revolves around a mental model that a child develops on nature and
human intelligence. Language development is crucial in child development where the baby has
to acquire a certain language as dictated by one’s culture (Piaget & Margaret Cook vol. 8). In
this development concept, as explained by Lawrence Kohlberg, he proposes moral development
through three stages of life: the pre-conventional level, which involves punishment orientation
and pleasure-seeking orientation, conventional and the post-conventional level (Lawrence 90).
Teaching a child about cultural awareness and diversity is important since the child will
develop respect and understanding of the community. The child will understand similarities and
differences in the context of race, religion, language and also the familial background. It will
spark the curiosity of knowing who they are in the contemporary world.
