Q.1 the primary conflict in Antigone
When Antigone's brother dies, she desires to give him a proper and befitting send-off.
However, there is a problem which threatens to hinder Antigone from accomplishing the
mission. Creon has insisted that Polynices cannot be buried since he had led the military forces
that invaded Thebes. Now, at the beginning of the play, Antigone's brothers, Eteocles and
Polynices, have engaged each other in a fight which has led to the death of both of them.
However, due to a longstanding difference between King Creon and Polynices, the king orders
that no one should bury Polynices. The king is of the opinion that Polynices is a traitor due to the
nature of his past actions. However, Antigone is opposed to this order and decides that she has to
bury her brother so that he can have his honor' among the dead.
Ordinarily, when a person takes such a different position to what the king is advocating
for, problems of monumental proportions are likely to arise. Despite the statement by Creon that
anyone who buries Polynices will be prosecuted, Antigone is strongly compelled by moral
obligations, and she is determined to honor her brother in his death. In the long run, Antigone is
faced with what most tragic heroes face; tragic flaw. In her determination to please the dead,
Antigone fails to listen to the voices of reason, and she fails to listen to her sister, Ismene's plea
to allow reason to prevail. Even the willingness of the king to pardon her does not persuade her
to change her attitude. She prefers to die righteously rather than live a morally passive life.
What do the individuals in this conflict reflect?
From the analysis of the conflict, it is apparent that Antigone represents nature as she
embraces her fate. She has exhibited unrivalled level of love for family and boldness. Individuals
who are naïve could have easily wilted upon receiving the threats from the king. However,
