Malaria in Children below Five Years
Malaria is one of the life-threatening illness which is transmitted when one is bitten by an
infected female Anopheles mosquito which carries the Plasmodium parasite. Although the
disease is found in almost all parts of the world, the tropical and subtropical regions have a high
number of malaria cases (Zgambo et al n.p). People from all age groups can contact the deadly
disease, but infant cases have been on an increment with a 70.6% death cases for young children
in 2015.
The target audience is nursing mothers in rural communities in the tropical regions. This
audience has a responsibility to make sure that young ones are safe. The ecological model of
health behavior is mainly based on the environment and policy context of how people behave
and the influence of social and psychological characters to these actions. The model dictates that
multiple levels exist in behavior characteristics like intrapersonal and interpersonal factors.
Based on the ecological model, the intervention used to reduce malaria in children under
the age of five is educating nursing mothers on practices that help to reduce the disease. Using
the model, the behavioral factors that are considered in this intervention include (Zgambo et al
n.p). some cultural practices which facilitate mosquito breeding. The non-behavioral aspects
include both the geographical and ecological factors that promote the availability of mosquitoes.
Empowering caregivers with knowledge of what should be done to prevent malaria is
expected to have a positive impact. With the experience on measures that are necessary to reduce
death cases and to learn about the symptoms of the disease at an early stage is essential. The
expected outcome is that death rate will significantly decrease as a result of this intervention.
