Mate Selection Process
In the contemporary society, the issue of mate selection has taken a new shift. Current,
mate selection, especially among the youth, is viewed as a normal thing but in reality, there are
many factors which influence this choice. This, in turn, affects the type of families that are
developed from these relationships. It is therefore vital for an individual to be wary during mate
selection as this to some extent have implications on the family one makes in future. This paper,

Mate selection is an evolutionary process in which an individual chooses opposite mate
depending on the attractiveness of that person phenotypic traits. There are several social factors
which influence this process. For example, propinquity. Propinquity is the closeness between
two people. This social element increases the chances of mate selection more in the current
society as compared to the earlier days. Nearness has in fact been the main factor that has
increased the probability of many relationships especially those people who marry after meeting
in their learning institutions. Ideally, it is hard to marry someone who is far away. For example,
for a person living in the US, it will be hard to marry another living in South Africa. This is
because of the distance where there is no closeness. Another social factor is homogamy.
Admittedly, everyone is free to marry anyone one likes as a principle. However, practically,
there are social forces which influence our choices of mate selection (Coyne, James & Geraldine
Downey 8). For example, the school we attend, the people one meets often and the area where
one lives all limit one's choice of mate selection .consequently, homogamy is the practice that an
individual is likely to marry a person whose social attributes are similar in a way as these social
attributes are considered imperative by the society. These social attributes include educational
level, race, social class, and age. Lastly, there is religion as another social factor. Religion plays
an important role when it comes to mate selection. It offers an individual a large pool of options.
Through the process of socialization, norms, and values that a person acquires as they grow from
childhood, religion shapes these aspects hence becoming an important factor in the process of
male selection. For example, people tend to marry from the same beliefs in the current society.
In the US, the concept of marriage and family is changing due to the increased rate of
cohabitation, singlehood and same-sex partners. The immigrant bi-cultural families in the US
have differing view and practice of marriage and love. For example, the immigrants in the US
