SOCW6051 Week 7 Discussion Response
Kimberley,
A social worker should never allow their personal beliefs to cloud their judgment. If a
social worker is homophobic, there feeling could become evident to the client causing them
unnecessary distress. A social worker who is homophobic must be capable of completely
separating their feelings from the needs of the client to avoid causing them harm and to ensure
their needs are addressed. As you stated, personal beliefs should never intertwine with
professional beliefs. The needs of the client must always come first. If the client senses the social
worker does not agree with their lifestyle, it could damage the relationship. The best approach
for separating personal and professional ethics is to fully adhere to the NASW code of ethics and
fulfill the professional obligation to the client.
Some of the barriers identified include limitations to building social relationships,
professional barriers, limitations of opportunities to teach students about same-sex marriages and
parenting. I agree members of the LGBTQ community face many barriers. It is the responsibility
of the social worker to identify and address these barriers. This can be done by working directly
with individual and families or by working for social change for the entire LGBTQ community.
Barriers to services you identified can be overcome by a professional social worker working with
LGBTQ clients by putting aside personal values in order to embrace the professional values of
social work while providing assistance to the client. The social worker should never show any
bias and should treat all clients fairly and equally. Any bias will only cause unnecessary harm to
the client.
