PENICILLIN ANTIBIOTICS
Penicillin refers to a group of antibiotics which are derived from Penicillium fungi.
Penicillin antibiotics are very important because they were the very first types of drugs which
were effective in fighting various diseases such as tuberculosis, syphilis and also staphylococcus
infections. Penicillin was discovered by a Scottish scientist known as Alexander Fleming in the
year1928.it started being used by people to treat infections in 1942. On September 28, 1928,
Alexander Fleming noticed a petri dish that contained Staphylococcus plate culture had been left
open by mistake. This had been contaminated by blue-green mould. There was a lot of inhibited
bacterial growth all around it. Alexander Fleming concluded that the mould was emitting a
substance which was repressing growth and lysing the bacteria. Fleming then grew a pure culture
and in so doing discovered that it was a Penicillium mould. This later led to the development of
medicines that could be able to kill certain kinds of disease-causing bacteria inside the body.
There are different forms of penicillin, for example, Benzylpenicillin (penicillin G),
Phenoxymethylpenicillin (penicillin V), Procaine benzylpenicillin (procaine penicillin),
Benzathine benzylpenicillin (benzathine penicillin). Penicillins are still being widely used today
although many types of bacteria have developed resistance as a result of continued use.
Advantages
The major advantage of taking antibiotics such as penicillin is that it can save the lives of those
infected with different bacterial infections.
Penicillin can also shorten the length of time of infection and prevent the spread of infections to
other parts of the body and also other people.
