How does the process of dialysis work to resolve kidney problems? Explain how the process
works.
The kidneys job is to eliminate substances not needed in the body, such as waste and the
excess amount of water some people carry. Some people’s kidneys are not fully functionable due
to varying circumstances, and they require a procedure called dialysis. It begins by using a fluid
called dialysate, which contains sodium, chloride, and glucose. During the use of the fluid, it
cleans the blood system by riding it of wastes and toxins. An entry port is started (access site),
which is when a needle is cannulated to that location. The blood exits the body through the
access site, follows through the tubing, and into the dialysis machine. The machines purpose is to
clean the blood of the harmful substances, and then return it through the tubing, into another
port, connecting to the body. The blood is cleaned by the fluid mentioned earlier, dialysate.
