GROUPTHINK 2
Groupthink
The groupthink theory is a widely applied concept that reiterates the possibility of faulty
decision making by groups as a result of group pressures which cause deteriorated mental
efficiency, reality testing, and moral judgmental capabilities (Janis, 1972). As such, the group
members often end up making compromised decisions due to the groupthink effects. Thus, the
quality of the decisions is reduced. The principles of conformity and compliance can be used to
explain the how groupthink can adversely affect the decisions made in a group.
The principle of social proof tends to dominate the ideological positions of group
members, thus compelling them to endorse various decisions without necessarily evaluating their
quality, but just by the fact that their colleagues support such decisions. Groupthink may also
lead to resolutions proposed by the people in authority since the group members tend to think
that their leaders are right or deserve to decide at all times (Golkar, 2013). Group decisions may
also be compromised on the principle of liking where individuals endorse a decision because
they like the proposer, without examining its validity. Reciprocity may also lead to poor group
decisions where group members support their colleagues decisions since they expect their
support at a future date in decision making, or they had previously supported them in the same
(Golkar, 2013).
