Dear Cousin,
I hope you are doing well little one. I miss you and hope to see you soon, however,
before I visit, I would like to answer the question that you asked in your last letter. I understand
that you have an exam coming sooner than I will have come and therefore, I will try to it as
simply as possible to enable you to understand it fully. You requested that I explain to you the
process of chemical communication that happens within and between nerve cells during the
processes of sensing.
Before I explain how the nerve cells communicate, I would like to point out that the
nerve cells are the primary functional cells of our nervous systems. The other cells are called the
glial cells. The glial cells help the nervous cells in performing their functions in our bodies
through holding them in place and preventing them from losing their electrical signals to the
environment as rubber does for electrical wires.
Even though neurons communicate with each other, they do not touch each other. They
are separated by a space although they almost touch each other. The gap is called the synaptic
cleft. One neuron can have connected with thousands of other neurons because their axons have
many terminals. The axons are the part of the cells that have synaptic ends. Neurons are almost
like electrical connections. They use electrical signals as well as chemical signals to convey
messages among each other. The neurons usually have insides and outsides that are positively
and negatively charged. When dormant, the interior of neurons is more negatively charged than
their outside. When they are stimulated, special openings or gates open in their membranes and
allow positive ions inside and make them less negative. If the change in ionic charge attains
critical level called action potential, they cause more sodium ions to enter the cells. As a result,
