WHICH INSTRUMENT TO USE 2
To improve the quality of life, human services and social service agencies focus on
prevention and remediation of the problem. Therefore, to determine whether a client's need is
individual or part of a broader community various instruments should be used. As a director of
domestic violence shelter, I would use surveys and interviews. Surveys may be written and sent
to communities through mails, events, or even handed to people on the streets. On the other
hand, interviews may be led by persons or small groups whereby open-ended questions are
asked. For example, interviews can be done in a relaxed atmosphere that allows people to talk
openly during the assessments while surveys enable most people to complete the assessments.
There are various factors to consider before responding on a micro versus macro level including
the client size, agency purpose, practice setting and the presenting problem. For example, a
psychiatrist worker might refer to American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and statistical
manual to find out the level of a client’s depression (Cournoyer, 2015). The number of social
service agencies has increased over the years with an objective to determine the health and needs
of impoverished individuals and communities.
