Before starting to develop any health promotion program, it is essential to understand
what health entails from a sociological point of view. Weiss&Lonnquist (2017, p142) describe
health as the physical, psychological and social well-being; the ability to perform role functions;
the cultural perception of health and the presence or absence of disease symptoms.
Sociology focuses on all the six dimensions of health description with a particular focus
on the cultural and social perspectives. Therefore, the health program will consider the social
wellbeing and fitness to perform daily tasks. The social background has an impact on the health
outcomes. “Health is the state of optimum capacity of an individual for the effective performance
of the roles and tasks for which he has being socialized(Weiss &Lonnquist,2017’p143). The
perception of health differs in various cultures and social groups. Therefore, it will be important
to include the cultural and sociological understandings of health in the health promotion
program. Furthermore, the age, gender and knowledge level of the community will also be issued
to factor in drafting the plan.
A comparison of the common causes of mortality in New York and North Carolina
indicates that lifestyle diseases such as cardiovascular and respiratory illness have a significant
contribution. The program for promotion of health in such a community will require the
inclusion of health education on health protective behaviors. According to Weiss & Lonnquist
(2017, p144), most Americans eat a diet, take too little physical exercise and almost one in five
smoke cigarette." Poor choices of the lifestyle including unhealthy diets and lack of exercise lead
to obesity which is a predisposing factor for cardiovascular diseases. The community will need a
lot of education on the importance of lifestyle modification in disease prevention. Furthermore,
when promoting positive life choices, it will be crucial to consider the socio-demographic factors
as they have a major influence on the participation of the community in health protective
