QUALITATIVE AND QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH 2
In a bid to determine the differences between qualitative and quantitative research, this
paper compares two distinct studies. A first study is a qualitative approach that is centered on
establishing the effect that synaesthetic perceptions have on sexual experience. A second study is
a quantitative approach that focuses on determining the emotions that are induced by the music.
The research question of the qualitative study is to examine what the nature of sexual
experiences in synaesthetes is? The hypothesis test is to determine whether the synaesthetic
perceptions have an impact on sexual experiences during sexual intercourse. This study uses
questionnaires and qualitative interviews to obtain reliable information that can help answer the
research question and hypothesis. Based on the research findings it comes out that synaesthetes
were less satisfied a contradiction to the hypothesis which claimed that synaesthetes are
associated with a high degree of sexual satisfaction and trance (Nielsen, Kruger, Hartmann,
Passie, Fehr and Zedler, 2013).
The research question for the quantitative research is why we tend to listen to music
when we are aware it evokes sadness (Kawakami, Furukawa, Katahira and Okanoya, 2013). The
study hypothesized that perceived emotion would not correspond to the felt emotion in response
to music. The research utilized experiments where participants were expected to listen to music
before sharing their opinions. The research findings prove the hypothesis to be true since results
indicate the degree to which participants felt and emotion were lower as opposed to how they
perceived it.
The first study on synaesthetic has utilized the qualitative research methodology whereas
the study of music uses a quantitative methodology. The two research methods are similar in the
