Introduction
Correctional officers manage prisoners within correctional facilities and are tasked with
implementing the rule of their incarceration. The job of a correctional officer is an important and
fulfilling career. However, being a correctional officer also comes with various challenges.
Challenges
One major challenge that comes with being a correctional officer is the risk of assault.
Correctional officers encounter frequent threat of getting assaulted or harmed by convicts who
modify ordinary objects into unusual weapons. Some of the items used by inmates to assault
officers can range from safety razors to broken glass or even locks. According to a November
2007 report by the United States Department of Justice, the biggest risks rises from items honed
to become weapons. Also, job burnout is a major challenge for correctional officers. Custodial
surroundings often come with longer durations of boredom, isolation and physical danger. To
cope with these challenges, officers often disconnect themselves emotionally from their
environment. This makes correctional officers vulnerable to job burnout and stress. This can also
trigger compassionate fatigue for correctional officers (Bourbonnais et al., 2005).
Another common challenge experienced by most correctional officers is psychological
stress. Studies have shown that correctional officers are more likely to suffer substantial
psychological stress. The emotional control required to address attacks, convict hostilities and
other institutional realism further translate to zero psychological amnesties for the correctional
officer that operates in such surroundings. Correctional officers can suffer long-term mental
trauma. This condition can make it extremely challenging or impossible for officers to separate
home and work life (Farkas, 2001). Furthermore, officers that suffer from these stresses often
