CRIMINAL PROFILING MYTH VS REALITY 2
I like watching investigative movies because of how the offenders are usually caught
using high-end tactics. They also show mind blowing and intriguing technology which fascinate
many viewers. It makes me feel like I should be an investigator too and become the superhero.
Movies such as Untraceable and Criminal Minds create a perception that the work of cops and
investigators is easy. They come up with concepts that navigate a criminal and their expected
move for their next crime which leaves one wondering how they knew (Vlahos, 2012).
Sometimes a scene can show how they catch a suspect who enters in a restaurant and orders for
coffee. Following hunches, they bump into the restaurant and take fingerprints from the cup the
suspect was using so as to identify the criminal. All these glamorized tactics create suspense so
that one can keep watching.
These are just intriguing acts that filmmakers use so that they can impress viewers. In
reality, before cops and their investigating teams get to trace a suspect's movement, it takes a lot
of time. Sometimes they even don’t succeed till another similar crime happens which could have
usable leads. Criminal profiling relies on the critical study of criminal behaviors and through
training (Canter, 2010). Statistics show that profilers just are not always 100% right mostly, they
reaffirm what the investigative teams already know.
Profiling images in popular culture are different from the detectives’ world reality
because it portrays that the information profilers give is always accurate concerning a criminal
case. The fact that it makes people believe that investigations are carried out by large teams is a
fallacy. In reality, few federal agents carry out the investigations and most of the time; their
findings are not always justified. Considering that they usually have much work ahead of them, it
makes them take less time concentrating on just one task.
