The Madrid Bombing in 2004
Spain is a country that has a population of approximately 1.4 million people most of
whom are Muslims. The country’s proximate to North Africa led to it participating in the
attempt to curb the impact of increased terrorists in areas such as Iraq and Afghanistan. It is this
involvement of Spain in Iraq that is thought to be the basis of the commuter train bombing that
occurred on 11th March 2004. When the attack first happened, the authority blamed Eta which is
a Basque group and a terrorist organization labeled by both the United States and the European
Union. However, the team denied being involved in the attack after the anonymous phone calls
that were made to the Basque media outlet.
After thorough investigations by the police department, the attack was reported to have
been carried out by radical Islamists groups. The group was formed through the affiliated
network of Al Qaeda Jihadists who joined forces in the years 2002 to 2003 (Alonso, 2013). This
system was created by people from different areas with one of the member groups being the
remnants of the Combatant Group Cell from Moroccan Islamist. The other group that was
involved in this attack is the remnants of Al Qaeda group that had been present in Spain since
1990s. The last group of the network came from residents who were involved in criminal
activities such as drug trafficking and robbery. The total number of terrorists estimated to have
been involved in the attack was 27.
Investigations to determine who was responsible for this attack started with the police
looking at the nature of explosives used. The quality of the bombs was determined to be an
advanced form of the usual ETA dynamites which made them be among the suspects. However,
by making contacts with the group who denied being involved prompted the investigation team
to further their search to other groups leading them to the group that conducted the attack. The
