TRAGEDIES PRIOR TO THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION 2
Tragedies before the American Revolution have greatly signified what others have
endured through tribulations, massacres, slavery, and witch trials. Such events have established
what history. The Salem Witch Trials began in 1692 and is considered a dark time in the history
of America. During the hysteria, there were multiple people who were killed and over two-
hundred people who had been accused of such hysterias. The Boston Massacre was a murdering
spree of five colonies that the British attacked in 1770. The tension that had been growing in the
American colonies ever since Royal Troops appeared enforcing heavy tax burdens throughout
the population that was a direct response imposed by the Townshend Acts. The Middle Passage,
however, compelled many slaves African-Americans’ to die from diseases, starvation, and
despair during the journey from W. Africa to the Indies caused many pains to suffer. Once the
slaves arrived at their destinations in the Indies, they were cleaned up in hopes to be sold for a
high price. However, the ones who couldn’t be sold were left to die.
Ever since the dark days of the Salem Witch trials, multiple cases of witchcraft were
brought to light enforcing Salem to jail and kill those who were claimed to be witches with
hysteria. In the Massachusetts Bay Colony throughout the 17
th
century, many afflicted girls
accused victims Sara Good, Tituba, and Sara Osborne of enacting witchcraft practices (Brooks,
2011). However, these victims of such hysteria were eventually released from jail. The Salem
Witch Trails is known to be the perfect example what is called scapegoating. Meaning, there was
a fear that was combined with the events of a traumatic experience that triggered and lead to
scapegoating. People throughout Massachusetts didn’t take the Witch Trials too lightly because
all feared that the Devil was in a constant frenzy trying to destroy the communities and
Christians of the state (Brooks, 2011).
