HEALTH INSURANCE 2
The article on “strategies for expanding health insurance coverage in vulnerable
populations”, is a review of two studies that were done in the USA on the effect of strategies
that were used to augment the number of people that enrolled into Health Insurance Programs
from groups of people who were considered vulnerable (Jia, et al., 2014). These vulnerable
people are outlines as children, people suffering from disabilities, immigrants, old people and
people from races and ethnicities that are considered as minorities. These people were seen to
be the ones in most need of health insurance coverage but the ones who least enrolled in
coverage programs (Jia, et al., 2014). The reason for this was found to be that most of the
people from these vulnerable groups found the application process tedious or enrolment to
these health insurance programs was very expensive.
The article also states that as much as most governments try to improve health
insurance coverage programs by making the categories of people who can join more inclusive
as well as making it the membership cheaper, there are still people who are not aware that
they can join or they find the application process very complicated (Jia, et al., 2014). The
article thus suggests that governments should seek to simplify application processes.
In one of the studies that were reviewed, Latin American families with children who
had not been insured were informed about health insurance coverage, assisted in the

In the second study, health insurance coverage forms were availed to families of those
children who were going to the emergency sections of hospitals. The subsequent behavior of
these families was then contrasted to those of families who lacked information or support in
the enrolment to health insurance coverage programs (Jia, et al., 2014).
The results that were obtained showed that families that received additional
information and assistance were more willing not only to enroll their children but also to keep
