An ichnographic plan entails a new conceptual notion towards the depiction of cities, in
which quantitative topographical connections were prioritized over the symbolic elements and
the real appearance of the city. The historical significance of this plan is that it provided
abstraction physical reality that led to an image demonstrating selective data regarding a city. An
ichnographic plan relates to symbolic mapmaking in the sense that it expresses symbolic maps
for a city (Pinto, p. 38).
2. How did Leonardo’s plan of Imola compare to those that came before it?
In Leonardo’s plan of Imola, a city is depicted as if seen from a countless number of
standpoints, all perpendicular to each structural element. Da Vincis plan of Imola compares to
those that came before it because the Imola plan comprised of an abstraction that entailed a high
level of skill to assess and record each view. In other words, Leonardo utilized the ichnographic
elements whereas those that came before him did not use the elements.

reconstructed state as opposed to its ruined state. Therefore, the plan did not focus on Bufalinnis
background but was inspired by antiquarian interests (Pinto, p. 40).
