Week Four Journal: Construction of Good Arguments
Constructing good arguments can be helpful in earning respect from colleagues in my
career. Through construction of good arguments, an image is created that I am familiar with the
topic of discussion; even when the knowledge in the said topic is minimal. For example, when
arguing about the psychological effects of the Libyan war on the civilians, I could create a good
argument based on psychology alone since I do not have the necessary information about the
Libyan war. However, by creating a clear strong argument based on general knowledge of
victims of war, I can be seen as relevant and knowledgeable.
Creating good arguments provides relevant information for both sides thus making
decision making easier. Good arguments involve making both sides fair and as such no
information is left out; as such, the choice made is free from biasness. For example, when a
sixteen year old reports an incidence of bullying or violence, it is vital for the clear good
arguments to be stated before the perpetrator is punished. Good arguments can be used to
legitimize the claims, find out the perpetrator and discern the necessary punishment. Without
good quality reasoning, claims made by the sixteen year old could lead to punishment of an
innocent victim.
