Cognitive theories
According to the principles of the TSA, issues with gender have to be asked discretely
and with respect, this is something that Petosky was denied. Asking her demeaning question
about her characteristics is pretty disrespectful and according to the theory, this is caused by
tension in our societies and it can be reduced if people move away from ego-centrism and
understand people as they are. As a person appears with transgender characteristics, the TSA
agents are quick to judge them with a claim of knowing their work.
Contextual theories
The theory examines some contextual factors that determine and foretell behaviors
related to transgender issues. People are taught about different aspect of life and they interpret
them based on their own experiences. This related to the article in a way that the TSA agents
have ideas on how transgender are treated, this might be based on what they have heard or
experienced before and just like everyone else, they feel that the transgender shouldn’t be treated
with any dignity or respect. It would have been different is the agent was handling a man or a
woman.

The course from the chapter relates to the article by examining the beliefs and attitudes
that people have for different genders. People discriminate because they are insecure and afraid
of free association. Understanding genders as they are is the best because people get out of the
cocoon of discrimination (Ullman 2010).
