Disaster Recovery.
Cold sites are a type of disaster recovery services that provide an office space with no set up such
that the customers must install their own equipment needed to continue with their operations. Hot
sites on the other hand provide the office space as well as the needed equipment and set up such
that the customer can arrive and continue with their operations immediately. Real-time mirroring
is used so as to recover critical data after a disaster have occurred. Depending on the type of
organization, and the recovery time objective of the organization, an organization can adopt a
disaster recovery mechanism that suits their organization. Ideally, cold sites have a recovery time
objective in terms of days, hot sites have a recovery time objective in terms of hours and real time
mirroring have recovery time objective in terms of minutes.
Cold sites are best suited for smaller businesses or companies and it’s the most basic type of
disaster recovery option. For example, a research firm could operate for a day or several days
without their main information system. Most of the employees in a research firm have laptops and
can collect their data, feed the data into spreadsheet, summarize their research results and then
upload their study findings into their main servers at a later time when the cold site is fully
operational. Hot sites on the other hand are most suitable for businesses or organizations that could
operate for several hours without having access to their main information system. During this time,
they can use paper-based entries, for example, a local retailer can use paper based forms to record
and process new sales orders in case the information system fails and subsequently enter the
transactions later in to the main information systems when the hot site becomes operational.

Real-time monitoring is used for businesses which are internet-based and cannot operate without
their information systems being up and running. For example, a banking institution cannot process
customer deposits and withdraws without having access to their information systems and for such
organizations, they must have a backup systems ready all the time in case the main information
system fails. Most banks and financial institutions use web hosted information systems.
