Bacon’s revolt on Jamestown
At times, English chose to gain their land through application of force, while at times, the
Virginia leaders chose to negotiate. In taverns and in the general assembly, the colonial leaders often
debated on strategies which were appropriate but during the 1676, the debate erupted into a civil war
amongst the colonialists. It was after Nathaniel Bacon claimed that he championed those who were
living in the leading edge and were subjected to the intimidation of harm by the Native Americans.
Researchers who have studied the Bacon’s Rebellion have presented him as radical who sought
liberty, lead Virginians to resist against a colonial governor who had turned into a cruel reactionary and
a tyrant. Others have suggested him as opportunist trying to progress his own chances at power and
wealth, through mobilization of poor farmers in the front line to vent their frustrations first through
attacking Native Americans who were innocent and rebelling ultimately against the colonial authority
(Browning & Nicholas, 2016).
Bacon’s Rebellion probably was amongst the most intriguing yet confusing chapters in the
history of Jamestown. Over the past few decades, a research based from a distant viewpoint, historians
have identified that the Rebellion was a control struggle which involved two selfish and stubborn leaders
instead of a magnificent struggle which involved tyranny.
The essential figures in the revolt were opposites. Governor Sir William Berkeley, was a frontier
combatant, a veteran of English Civic Wars, the king’s desired in his term, a scholar and a dramatist. His
reputation and name as Virginia governor were respected.
The Bacon’s rebellion can be associated to countless of causes, all which contributed to dissent
of the colony. Economic issues such as growing commercial completion from the Carolinas and the
Maryland, declining tobacco price, increasing prices from English feigned supplies, and the increasingly
restrictions in the English market caused problems t the Virginians. There were a series of heavy losses
by the English in the newest sequence of naval war against Dutch and, close to home; there were other
many issues which were associated with the weather. Floods, hailstorms, hurricanes and dry spells, took
the colony all in a year and it had damaging effects on the colonists. Such difficulties acted as the
encouragement to the colonists in finding a scapegoat beside those they could declare their frustration
jointly with the blame to their misfortunes.
The colonists had found their scapegoat and those were the local Indians. Trouble started on
July 1675 when Doeg Indians raided Thomas Mathew’s population, in the Northern Neck near Potomac
River in Virginia. The raid left several Doegs dead. This dispute began over a non-payment of some
commodities Mathews had acquired from this tribe. The situation turned critical after the colonist’s
retaliatory strike that took the wrong Indians, the Susquehanaugs, and this sled to large scale of Indian
raids.
In bringing the situation on control and to stave future attacks, the governor ordered
investigations to be conducted over the matter. A catastrophic assembly between the parties was called
and this resulted to numerous tribal chiefs losing their lives. Throughout the entire crisis, Berkeley

pleaded continually for a restrain from the colonists. Some who included Bacon did not adhere and he
ignored the direct orders of the Governor to seize some friendly Appomattox natives who allegedly had
stolen corn. Berkley reprimanded him and this led dissatisfied Virginians to get confused over which of
the men had undertaken the correct action. Here, it was where the line battles were regarding to be put
(Carroll & Al, 2016).
A further issue was that Berkeley attempts of finding compromise and his policies of preserving
the loyalty and friendship of subject Indians and assuring safety of settlers. In meeting his first aim,
Berkeley relieved the locals of their ammunition and powder and in dealing with the subsequent goal;
he called what was termed as the Long Assembly. Although he had been judged dishonest, the assembly
declared hostility on Indians who were regarded to be bad while setting up a very sturdy defensive
district around Virginia and which had a definite command chain. The wars which began due to the
directives led to high taxations sin order to sustain the army, and to the discontent general colony for
shouldering the burden.
The American who regarded themselves to be favored and great sought their own ways to profit
from all resource aspects, both social and economic development, but instead held convictions that the
native Indians were lesser, accordingly to the slave trade. In the early years of the colonial America, a
time when labor was at demand and plantations boomed, most of British citizens sought new lives from
English mainland and which secured passage to the American colonies through the indentured
servitude.
Centuries since the colonial America, so much has changed. This is to mean that the indentured
slaves and servants have been prohibited, where else, individuals have who provide labor is to be
compensated. However, the American colonist’s ideals that they practice and believe that they have
high social race is also considered in current society through the racial discrimination, one which bring
public criticism and contain legal ramifications.
The Bacon’s Revolt was due to the accumulated tensions between the native Indians and the
American people in the region. The conflict only sought for retribution for the frontier attacks by the
native Indians. However, this was the start of series of conflicts in the region and which ultimately led to
trade tensions (Hayes, Kevin & ed, 2015).
