T.P Flanagan painting of Castle Coole
The title of the artwork is "Saloon at castle coole" The picture is displayed in the
entrance of Castle Coole which was the residence of the Earl of Belmore and regularly holds art
exhibitions in honor of renown artists. I paid a visit to the castle coole art gallery in a museum in
Ireland due to its rich history and culture. The artwork is dated 1982, which was the year it was
developed by T.P Flanagan at the request of the Earl. The work of art is wooden framed, and the
dimension of the painting is 53 inches by 35 inches adopting the shape of a rectangle and hanged
as a portrait in the gallery. The room where the art is displayed has other artworks exhibited in
landscape form and are smaller size when compared to the painting of Castle Coole. The other
artist whose work is presented in the room is James Merigot. The work is an earlier painting of
the Enniskillen area where the Castle Coole is located. The color of the walls where the art is
hanged is a shade obtained by combining pink and white color in a ratio of one to two. The mood
of the artwork, saloon castle coole is relaxing. In the case of the painting, the feeling is
determined by the colors used by the artist in the artwork. The art is a window which opens to
the greenery at the lawn. Standing before the artwork, one gets the feeling they are staring across
the room and out of the window to the area beyond hence the restfulness one feels.
The artwork narrates a story of its own. Looking at the painting, one is amazed at the few
details that the painter used in work yet the aspect tells a far more significant story. The picture
narrates the story of power and beauty. Given that T.P Flanagan was contracted to paint an image

of the Earls residence, it was not lost upon him that the house carried with it the power that the
Earl wielded over the people. The imposing windows that the painter included in the artwork
tells the story of control as it means that the Earl has a better view of the world from the room
depicted in the painting.
The artist, T.P Flanagan, used oil based paint on canvas to create various images in the
artwork. The green color is used to paint the areas beyond the room which is the grass and the
bushes near the house. The artist also used different shades of brown to indicate the curtain and
the wooden floorboards used to build the house. The artist also used a mosaic of black and gray
colors to paint the walls of the room. In other places, white color is used to paint the walls. Paint
is applied in a manner that depicts the texture of the materials used in the room like the curtain,
the floor, wall, and the table. Also, Flanagan uses color to brings out the desired effect of light.
Curtains are made from a soft fabric. As a result, the artist used a solid coat of paint but with
dark lines where folds are supposed to be. Furthermore, the artist used a mix of colors on the
inner walls giving it a grainy look. The artist used a light shade of brown on the floor to express
the durability of the floorboards.
In the painting, light is not the primary means of expression. As a result, the artist used it
sparingly. For example, the painter used light to express warmth. The artist also uses the surface
to reflect light and disperse it across the room to achieve the element of heat. Flanagan also used
light to emphasize some objects in the image, for example, the curtains while at the same time
making other items partially visible.
The elements in the artwork are well balanced. The table is placed at the middle of the
room, while the curtains are drawn to the side to reveal massive windows that show the green
lawn. Furthermore, the color used on the floor blends with the colors of the curtain making the
