Introduction
Nurses have an important role in the healthcare system. It is therefore important to
ensure that they are both physically and emotionally fit to do their jobs appropriately (Burns,
& Groove, 2011). Nurses participate actively in the suffering that patients undergo. It,
therefore, becomes difficult at some point for oncology nurses, to watch helplessly as their
patients go through several surgeries and high doses of strong medicine that affect them
negatively (Burns, & Groove, 2011). It is therefore important to come up with ways to
ensure that these nurses are able to be in control of their emotions as well as physical well-
being.
Background of Study
Oncology nurses are usually in constant contact with patients who suffer a lot, both
physically and emotionally for a long time. This contact causes them to be fatigued since they
have to deal with patients and members of their families who are stressed as well as
emotionally unstable (Aycock, & Boyle, 2009). The nurses, therefore, become physically and
emotionally fatigued. In most cases, these nurses cannot do any more to alleviate the patients'
suffering. The nurses' morale is therefore diminished due to the feeling of helplessness. All
these experiences make oncology nurses to have higher chances of getting compassion
fatigue (Aycock, & Boyle, 2009).
Problem
There have been plenty of complaints about the fact that oncology nurses are not
meeting the required threshold in their nursing practice. It has been noted that these nurses
have a tendency of neglecting their patients as well as well as showing signs of emotional
detachment after being in the practice for a while. The quality of care that patients get is
