Characteristics of a Good Leader

According to Harris & Sherblom (1999), everybody demands that a leader should

have several characteristics and attributes that make him/her a good leader. Impacting

others, differentiating needs, and decision making are just a fraction of the many features

a leader has. Nevertheless, there are more characteristics that make being a leader one of

a kind. Among other attributes that make a good leader are people who are visionaries,

can manage conflict, effective communicators, are credible, and much more. They

emphasize that leaders should do more than keep track of events and convene meetings.

Leaders should maintain the total picture while directing the group towards that vision,

which requires the development of short and long-term goals, managing conflict,

focusing attention, and enabling others to help in the process of creativity. According to

Kouzes & Posner (1995), vision is a unique and perfect image of the future, from a

leadership perspective. The vision must be motivating, compelling, and empowering

(Bennis, 1997). It connects members of the organization and encourages greatness.

Creating a vision for the future enables transformation and change in the organization.

Exceptional leaders see the complete picture and do not get too absorbed in particular

initiatives or tasks. They are brilliant in setting up clear organizational goals and

objectives.

Leaders should have the required skills in managing conflict in their field of

leadership. Conflict among employees in a field of specialization takes place when there

are varying opinions, and individuals appear to disagree (Blickle, Meurs, Wihler, Ewen,

& Peiseler, 2014). Conflict is an ordinary incident in organizations, and a leader should

be able to offer some guidance on the way forward without endangering the relationship
