Venus of Willendorf
Venus of Willendorf refers to a Venus figurine that is believed to have sculpted about
2500BC. This sculpture is approximately 11.1cm in height and does not stand alone. It was
discovered in a village in Austria and made of oolitic limestone. The exact time when the
sculpture was made has not been ascertained, but most of the analysis done by a group of
researchers agree that it dates back to 22000BCE (Staniszewski, 1995).
Interpretation
Most of the sculptures that got discovered in the twentieth century and the early part of
the 21st century have collectively referred to as “Venus Figurines.” The blanket reference of all
