Johnstown Flood and Space Shuttle Challenger stories
The Johnstown Flood and Space Shuttle Challenger stories are both catastrophic events
that took place in America. The Johnstown flood took place in 1889 in Pennsylvania as a result
of a dam that broke following heavy rainfall. On the other hand, the Space Shuttle Challenger
was a tragic event that involved a description of a shuttle in flight. These two stories involved the
death of people which an estimated 2,209 people are dying in the flood while seven crew
members died in the destroyed in the shuttle. However, these two stories are different in several
ways. To begin with, the destruction of the shuttle destroyed seven lives compared to the larger
number of people destroyed in flood. Additionally, the flood was a result of an overwhelmed
dam that could not hold the amount of water after days of heavy floods. Conversely, the space
shuttle Challenger has attempted to complete its mission nine times before failing on the tenth.
On the flip side, both disasters were primarily engineering disasters.
For many, the Johnstown flood disaster took place because of failed dam maintenance in
as much as the courts maintained that it was an act of God. Similarly, the explosion of the space
shuttle Challenger was later identified as a mistake on the assembling of the parts. According to
the investigation, the O-rings used in the joint seal of the rockets were unsuitable for the ambient
temperature at the time of the launch. In this regard, both events were engineering disaster and
the only difference being the extent of havoc and death caused. Another major difference is that
the flaws in the rockets were identified by the part of the engineering team, but the rest insisted
on continuing with the mission. In conclusion, the two stories are similar because they stem from
engineering mistakes.
