Dialysis as a Means of Kidney Treatment
The Kidney is a vital organ within the body's functional ability. This stems from its roles
of filtering the blood, removal of waste, adjusting electrolyte balance, and regulating the balance
of body fluids. However, the onset of high blood pressure or diabetes which are major causative
factors of kidney failure may warrant the need for dialysis. Dialysis refers to a mode of treatment
that utilizes a machine to purify and filter blood (Maher). This is done with a view of maintaining
body balance when the kidneys are rendered un-functional. However, there is a need to understand
the fact that dialysis doesn’t cure kidney diseases instead it maintains body functioning.
In order to gain a profound understanding of how dialysis works, this paper will analyze
the most common method of dialysis known as hemodialysis. A hemodialysis is an artificial
treatment that takes between three to six hours (Ufur). This form of dialysis is recommendable at
a minimum of three times in a week. However, treatment can as well be carried out in more
recurrent sessions.
Usually, hemodialysis utilizes a hemodialyzer which is an artificial kidney in the
elimination of chemicals and waste from the body. Doctors pass blood to the hemodialyzer by
creating an entry point or a vascular access connecting to a patient's blood vessels. In so doing
large amounts of blood will be allowed to flow in the process of hemodialysis (Maher). Hence, a
lot of blood will be purified and filtered.
