Vasco Nunez de Balboa
Vasco Nunez de Balboa is a Spanish conquistador, governor, and explorer, living
between the years 1475-1519 (Markham 517). He assisted in developing the initial stable
settlement on the continent of South America at Darién. While expediting for gold in 1513; he
saw the Pacific Ocean (Markham 517). He appealed to the ocean for Spain, paving the way for
the Spanish exploration and conquest of South Americas western coast. However, his ambition
and achievement was a threat to the governor of Darién, Pedro Arias Davila, who had him
executed.
Vasco Nunez de Balboa was born on January 1475, in the small town of Jerez de Los
Caballeros. Though his father was a nobleman, they were not rich, which motivated him to seek
wealth in the new world. In 1500, he joined an expedition and ended up on the coast of Isthmus
of Panama, South America (Balboa 145). The local Indians in this region were peaceful, and he
settled in Darién, the initial Spanish settlement in South America. While playing the role of
governor in 1511, he was harsh to the residents while amassing gold (Balboa 145). From some
Indians, he learned that a rich empire could be found to the south. In 1513, he led an expedition
