Collapse of the soviet union
The soviet union was created in 1922 when a treaty was signed by Russia, Transcaucasia
(modern Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan) Belarus and Ukraine. At the top of its power, the
soviet union was made up of 15 countries before it collapsed. The collapse of the union began in
the 1980s and on December 25th in 1991 the union collapsed leaving each of the 15 states was
gone independent(History, nd). The collapse of the union marked the end of the cold war
between the united states and Russia. The cold war had begun earlier before the world war II
when Russia invited eastern nations into the soviet union to consolidate power in the east to
establish itself has the superpower(Norwich,2016).The collapse of the union can be credited to
decades of corruption and poor decisions by its leaders which ultimately led to the destruction of
the once mighty soviet union. This paper will discuss the events which led to the collapse of
the Soviet Union during the cold war.
To understand how the soviet union collapsed it is essential to look at its political
ideologies. The communist union government when it was created began has a socialist state and
later transitioned to communism. Before its collapse, the government had transformed to a
totalitarian regime in which communist leaders had complete control of everything, and there
was no freedom of speech. By the time that Mikhail Gorbachev took power in 1985, the country
was in deep political problems due to the political ideologies which the union was
practicing(Cold war, nd). Another issue that the union was facing at that time was a declining
economy since a corrupt government controlled all aspects of the economy. To improve the
