CONDITIONING IN MY LIFE 2
Conditioning in My Life
Behavior modification is related to the techniques that are used to either reinforce or
decrease a particular type of behavior or reaction (Sherman, 1973). It relies on a concept known
as conditioning, which is a form of learning. There are two types of conditioning; Classical
conditioning and operant conditioning. They are both behaviorist theories where one relies on
stimulus or signal and the other relies on reinforcements, which can either be positive or negative
reinforcements. In this paper, we will be looking at Classical conditioning, operant conditioning
and behavior modification.
Classical conditioning is about learning new behaviors through the process of association.
The process includes two stimulus (conditioned stimulus and unconditioned stimulus) which are
linked together to produce a new learned process (Gormezano & Moore, 1966). Unconditioned
stimuli produce unconditioned response, for instance when I find myself in high grounds I fear
looking down since I feel an overwhelming nausea. During conditioning, the stimulus does not
produce any response and is associated with unconditioned stimulus which is at this point a
conditioned stimulus. Example: Since I feel nauseated when in great heights I have developed a
kind of fear for heights. A new conditioned response is achieved when the conditioned stimulus
and unconditioned stimulus are associated. Example: The fear of great heights that I had developed
due to the nausea developed to a full-blown phobia which was associated to heights.
Operant conditioning is based on the concept of reinforcements where behaviors are
changed to a desired response after receiving a reinforcement. This type of conditioning has three
types of responses or operant that influence behavior change: Behavior consequences,
reinforcement or even punishment (McLeod, 2007). Behavior consequences is learning of
behaviors that happens due to consequences of ones actions. Example: when I was little I hated
