DIALYSIS PROCESS 2
Dialysis process in solving kidney problems.
Dialysis is a process performed on patients with kidney problems to clean their blood of
wastes products and excessive fluids from the body. It is prescribed when the kidney fails to
perform its primary functions of cleaning and filtering the blood to remove harmful waste
products and fluids that can reach to dangerous levels if they are not excreted from the body.
Dialysis is a treatment process that uses a machine to purify and clean the blood when the
kidney fails. There are two types of dialysis used to artificially clean the blood namely;
hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. Hemodialysis uses a hem dialyzer as an artificial kidney to
filter and remove chemicals from the blood (Henrich, 2012). Doctors create a vascular access in
the patient’s blood vessels that allow blood to flow to the hem dialyzer. Vascular access also
allows blood to flow to the body during hemodialysis hence enabling blood to be purified
(Henrich, 2012). An arteriovenous fistula is a looped tube created to connect an artery and a vein
for long-term treatment dialysis. Patients undergoing hemodialysis treatment visit the hospital or
clinic at least three times a week and spend three to five hours on the dialysis machine while it
cleans the blood.
The second type of dialysis is the peritoneal dialysis where doctors perform a surgery to implant
a catheter into the belly. In this type of treatment, the dialysate flows into the abdomen drawing
wastes products out the blood and draining it into the abdomen (Henrich, 2012). The main types
of peritoneal dialysis are continuous ambulatory dialysis where the abdomen is filled and drained
several times per day. The other type is continuous cycler-assisted peritoneal dialysis that uses a
machine to circulate the fluid in and out of the abdomen.
