Motivation theories in behavior change
Introduction
The concept of human behavior has been the subject of a lot of study and research, with
most curiosity on the same generated by the need to know what drives human beings to behave
as they do in a diverse range of circumstances. The theme of motivation has thereafter abounded
as a viable explanation for the behavioral changes that occur in human interaction. The theories
of motivation therefore attempt to explain the nexus between the spheres of human behavior vis
a vis the justification behind the actions thereto. Motivation is therefore defined as the desire or
wants to achieve a specified accolade, which phenomenon occasions a goal-informed behavior.
There are a number of motivation theories that interrogate the realm of human behavior.
Depending on the schools of thought adopted by scholars, the theories revolve around the central
province of motivation. This paper however will focus on two primary theories of motivation, in
order to interrogate the place of behavior change as a function of motivation (Cherry, 2014).
Further, the paper will evaluate the above theories and their take on the premises of motivation
as a factor in either short term or long term behavioral change. Finally, the paper will culminate
with an analysis of the theories abounded and the limitations that their application may
encounter. The theories selected for the study are the needs based theories and the evolutionary
theory of motivation.
The Needs theory; Maslows Hierarchy of needs
Abraham Maslow appreciated the fact that the human behavior is directed by deficiency
or demand for something. He defined needs as the longing or condition that lingers and may only
be dispensed with when ultimately satisfied. He therefore formulated pyramid of needs, which
