How Girls Groups Songs Supported Feminism of Young Women
During the 1950s and 1960s, girls’ music was used to promote feminism so that societal
changes were made to promote women’s rights. Some of the rights that were needed to be equal
to those of the males included voting rights, ability to hold public offices, earning of fair wages,
need to be educated, and having equal rights within marriage. To support feminism, the musical
groups had to engage in their activities with objectives and targets to be met. The groups made
sure that all songs were analyzed with proper lyrics so that the audience would get the meaning
of what was being communicated. The musical movements were then linked with both historical
and social circumstances to relate them to their source and need to be understood(Warwick,
2013). Such girls’ groups often interpreted their music to link to problems that were experienced
by females so that their ideas were displayed in a manner wanting to end gender-based injustices.
Why Girls’ Group Music was seen to be Dangerous to Parents during the 1950s and 1960s
The music during this period seemed to be sensitive because it was fighting against the
society and parents were blamed not to guide their girls before making productions. Some of the
images in the music videos were unhealthy for families particularly those with children since the
girls’ music fought for female rights. An issue like sexual harassment could just be mentioned
and shown in both audio and video tapes, and parents felt such were dangerous for families and
authorities that were feared that they would arrest the girls. Commercial contents like drug abuse
and use of alcohol made parents suspicious about their daughters and most wondered where the
girls found out about such issues (Carson, 2015). The girls’ music, therefore, challenged parents
and most of them were ashamed about an issue that was presented since they had been
