How Colonists benefited From the British Empire and the Role of the North American Colonies
in Atlantic World trade
The British Empire was considered to be the biggest in the whole world. The British had
colonies all over the world that gained them a lot of influence and power. The impact of this
empire was felt in all the corners of the world because it brought both bad and good to the
colonists. It is reckoned as the transformative force that dominated the world for two centuries
(Lippman). The British Empire was in constant mutation throughout the years of its existence.
There is substantial evidence that the British Empire has contributed to the realization of
democracy in the countries it colonized. Actually, it has been confirmed that all the countries that
practiced democracy in the post-colonial era were British colonies (Lippman 27-28). There is a
direct relationship between democracy and the former British colonies. This positive correlation
is attributed to the infrastructure that was created by the British, whose focus was on democracy
and independence. This led to the development of systems of education, communication, and
transport that were critical in laying the ground for democracy (Lippman 27).
British Empire influenced the economic development of its colonies. They built the first
churches, universities, health facilities and infrastructures. These systems have had lasting
consequences on the economic development of the colonies (Dwayne 13). In Africa, the
British colonialism caused a complete turnaround on the culture, economy and social practices.

After the end of slave trade in the nineteenth century, the African economy was characterized by
a commercial integration of all the continents of the world. This also helped in increasing the
political stability and the trade interactions. Through colonization, most African states
agricultural practices became more commercialized and the demand for labor for labor went up
causing the landless to provide their labor in the farm in exchange for wages (Dwayne 10-13).
The British Empire colonies in the Northern America are also referred to as British North
America and there were several roles played by the British North America in the Atlantic World
trade. There were a total of 13 colonies in this region and they relied on the slave trade. The
demand for slaves was brought by the high demand for labor to work in their vast tobacco and
rice fields. The slave trade began in the 1620s and was fully established before 1975. During this
period, the white servants that were tasked with hard labor were all replaced by the slaves and
since there was an availability of arable land and labor, they expanded their production. The
number of slaves rose gradually as the trade expanded from 20 slaves in 1619 in Virginia to
462,000 in 1770 which was approximately 20% of the colonial population (David 24-26).
The colonialist trade in these colonies involved the production of the tobacco using the
cheap slave labor and exporting it in return for goods from Britain that had a huge demand
among the elite American colonists (David 30). These imports included furniture made from
hardwood, silk clothing, Chinese porcelain, sugar, tea and other exotic wares and foods in those
centuries. After a period of time, the land became exhausted from the production of tobacco that
saw them switch to cotton which resulted to a higher demand slave labor. The slave trade went
on until it was abolished in 1985 (David 30-33).
There were many colonies that benefited from imperialism in the world while others
suffered a great deal from it. The institutions that were established during the colonial times have
