Introduction
The five pillars of Islam represent necessary acts that an Islam should practice and are
summarized in the famous article of hadith of Gabriel. The pillars include shahadah that repents
faith, salat to mean prayer, zakat that mean charity, sawm that represents fasting, and hajj that is
known to be the pilgrimage of Mecca (Haruvy & Golshirazi, 2017). The Twelvers and Ismailis
Islam have different practices and some other pillars, but they share beliefs in the five pillars as a
religion. This paper discusses Sawm as a pillar of Islam.
Sawm
Fasting in Islam is known as Sawm, and it takes place using three types that include ritual
fasting, ascetic fasting, and fasting that compensates repentance. Ritual fasting is performed as
an obligation during the Ramadan month, and Muslims are advised to abstain from both drinks
and foods from dawn to dusk until the period ends. In the process of ritual fasting, all believers
should also be mindful of other sins, and everyone that has reached puberty should be doing so
unless they have some special conditions like diseases. Fasting as compensation for repentance
allows Muslims to seek God and get near to him so that he can offer them forgiveness for their
wrongdoings (Kamal, 2010). By fasting to repent, the Muslims express their thankfulness to God
and show that they are entirely dependent on him and thus are needy without God. By asking for
forgiveness, the Muslims tend to put more effort in fasting so that they can follow the teachings
of Islam and also refrain from issues like violence, greed, lust, envy, and anger among other
