Mutualism
According to Kelly, mutualism is based on the fundamental aspects of sharing, and
coexisting. It is an essential part of coevolution. In his work, he has analyzed mutualism by
comparing it to parasitism where over half of all living things on the planet are parasitic.
Additionally, he asserts that every living organism harbors at least one parasite, and this
relationship shows mutualism. In essence, mutualism is inter-dependability. In his analysis,
Kelly notes that mutualism is encouraged by evolution, and nature. As an organism evolves, it
becomes increasingly dependent on other organisms in its ecosystem. Additionally, opportunities
for cooperation are increased as organisms evolve around one another, and learn to help each
other (Kelly 311-312). Finally, as life proceeds, it creates avenues for dependencies between
species in the environment.
This biological perspective can be mirrored to the technological aspects of the industry.
Machines often have different parts that come from various manufacturers. However, they must
work together in order to operationalize the machine. This is mutualism. Additionally, the
relationship between humans, and machines has been increasingly mutual in the world of
technology. For example, Google has a speech engine that relies on human sound to execute
commands. This is a form of symbiosis that Kelly asserts has elements of mutualism (Kelly 312-
317).

Kelly believes that the mutualism is going to keep increasing because of the concept of
machines, and technology making work easier. People would rather use machines than exert
effort. This means that reliance on machines would increase as technology progresses.
Additionally, machines would rely on, and communicate with each other more as
interconnectivity is achieved, and connectivity sought in order to enhance human comfort. I
agree with this observation due to the fact that people, and machines are increasingly getting tied
together. A quick example is the demand for play stations. These devices are manufactured in
large numbers due to demand, and if market forces are to go by, then people are literary yearning
for machines that can work in synchrony for their comfort.
